Khuntai Restaurant @ Permatang Tengah, Butterworth

I have been hearing about this place since long time ago! And finally... Thanks to Szee's family!
The place is quite easy to find. Not far away from Sg. Dua exit of PLUS highway.

The restaurant is well known for their food and ambiance. We arrived at about 7pm, most of the small huts were occupied or reserved. Luckily there were still a few empty tables for us to pick.

Starting off with a jug of kedondong juice (ambra juice)

Their house specialty omelette with some unknown vegetables inside. Personally, I found it quite forgettable. Just like any other home style omelette. ;p
Spicy/spiciness: 0 (Not spicy)

Tom Yam Seafood
Fiery hot & flavorful. Be prepared for swollen lips after the meal (Szee & his sister did, lol!)
Spicy/spiciness: 5 (Fiery hot!)

Glass noodle (tang hoon) with prawns
Can also opt for crabs. But you'll have to pay according to crab's seasonal price.

Deep fried kangkung
A dish that is quite commonly found in Thai cuisine.
Spicy/spiciness: 0

Lala (forgotten which style it was cooked in)
Fresh & juicy!
Spicy/spiciness: 4 (it's hot!)

Of course, Thai food served with rice.
Well that's not all we had...

How could we leave out the steamed fish?
Steamed Siakap with assorted vegetables, served with a bowl of additional sauce (it's actually soup) for you to top up.
Spicy/spiciness: 4 (it's hot! But you can also choose for the non-spicy)

Kerabu mango.
Not my type as it wasn't sour. It wasn't hot either, until I bit the cili padi.
Spicy/spiciness: 0 (unless you eat the cili padi!)

Pretty much for 5 of us. That's why we missed out the pandan chicken. Our tummy is the limiting factor!

We added a jug of sugar cane juice.
And the total bill costs us RM164.
Scrumptious food, speedy service, nice ambiance... Worth it!

Keep this restaurant in your list for Thai food. Open daily from 11am to 12midnight. Halal restaurant.

Just realized that they have branch at PJ (Jalan Gasing) and Kepong (Aman Puri).
Must check it out when back to KL!

Restoran Yong Tau Foo Chan Chan @ Bandar Manjalara, Kepong

So long didn't blog about food. This time I don't talk about the quality of the food, but the service of the restaurant. I was greatly inspired by the lady boss of a restaurant to come out with this post.

Give a big round of applause to~~

Restoran Yong Tau Foo Chan Chan @ Bandar Manjalara, Kepong!

We, total of 4, reached at the restaurant before 8pm. We ordered 30 pieces of yong tau foo only but it took unreasonably long to get our food served. Knowing the sluggish service, once our food was served we straight away placed our order for additional 7 pieces to be taken away.

We finished our food, yet the take-away order was not done yet. We asked for the bill and also the take-away order, for SEVERAL times. Each time we asked, the workers (one chinese lady and many foreign workers) nodded but nobody had done anything on our request.

Our table was at the other side of the restaurant, so we moved to the counter and told the lady boss. She claimed that the kitchen crew were new and not familiar with the orders. She said she would ask them to cook for us IMMEDIATELY and then she went into the kitchen.

We ended up waiting at the counter for another ??minutes. For just 7 pieces of yong tau foo. Finally a chinese guy from the kitchen responded to us, "Sorry the orders are messed up. Another 2 minutes, very fast!"

What? Still have to wait. Okay fine, since it's just 2 minutes more so mum said ok, and we waited.

It was definitely more than 2 minutes yet there was no sign of any take-away order getting ready. I walked to the kitchen and asked the chinese guy for our order. If it's still not done yet then I might want to cancel it. "On the way! On the way!", he said.

Finally as the lady boss handed over the precious yong tau foo to us, I was expecting something like "Here is your order, sorry for keep you waiting...", or at least something like that.

Instead? Making a face, she blamed me for keep urging her although she had explained to me that the crew were new. What?! As if I had done something wrong! Hello, I spend almost 2 hours here just for 37pieces yong tau foo, 1 white rice and 2 chinese teas and WE PAY YOU FOR THAT! RM41! And now we as the customers being blamed.Through her tone of voice and facial expression, I thought we were not customers but the workers who didn't deliver the orders! This is really unacceptable.

I tried to keep my temper and told her not to simply give promise that she couldn't achieve; if the food is not ready yet then just tell the truth, don't let customers wait for 2 minutes and another 2 minutes,...endless! To my surprise she even raised her volume, repeated that her crew were new and I wouldn't understand because I didn't run my own business! What kind of service was that?! I really lost my temper. I do not run a restaurant, but at least I am not treated in this way at other restaurants! She shouted, "Then just go to other restaurants la!"

As her wish, I will definitely NOT going to revisit this restaurant.

I am not the only one who commented on her service. Check this out on Malaysia Most Wanted!

2007@1U

2008@The Cave

2008@Piccadilly

2008@MidValley

2009@Genting

2009@Tarbush, Sunway

2009@Jack's Place

2009@SCI

Happy belated birthday, dear!

Self-baked cake is a must for dear's birthday each year. Better late than never, duh?

A simple marble butter cake. Due to the tight budget, I just used up whatever ingredient I had in the kitchen.

Cake fresh from the oven, topped with smooth ice cream from Bentong.

My brother's version: kaya from KL Yut Kee coffeeshop as topping.

The simplest and spontaneous cake I ever baked without any recipe.

All cakes came late this year. Three slices of Secret Recipe cakes from my mum; Cappuccino cheese, White and black chocolate cheese and Blueberry cheese. I didn't upload the photos, they would make my cake looks bad. ;p
Happy belated birthday, dear.

Umma Son Korean BBQ Restaurant @ Desa Sri Hartamas

It was dear's 24th birthday. No celebration, just a simple dinner. After considering a few options that I offered, at last he picked this:

Umma Son, literally the mother's hand, means mother's cooking.

It was my second visit, while the first for dear. Thanks to Selina for recommending this place. It's owned and operated by a Korean lady who speaks fluent Cantonese after residing in Malaysia for years.

BBQ pork. RM18 per pax.

Look at these slices. Thick huh?

While grilling the pork, the friendly staff keep telling jokes and stories about their Korean customers. See how Szee was attracted to the stories?

No, you won't taste or feel the fatness. The lard melted upon grilling, and drained into a bowl. See the drain underneath the grilling pan? It was served with fresh lettuce and dippings, forgot to take a picture of it.

As usual, Korean restaurant always serves complimentary and refillable side dishes.

Their signature dish = my favourite dish = fried seafood with glass noodles. Oh my, how shall I describe it in words? Two thumbs up!!! Price: RM18? Forgotten, around there la.

Korean rice cakes. RM10? Not sure, forgotten. But I am sure that it was really nice! Very chewy and not too sweet, definitely differs from the texture of Korean rice cakes that you get elsewhere.

A recommendation from the staff. Bean paste soup, served with rice. Tasted like more flavourful version of miso soup, not bad. Priced around RM15, I couldn't recall!

The food were in large portions. What we had ordered were enough for 3-4 persons, I guess. Try this place if you opt for authentic Korean cuisine.
Umma Son, 1st floor, above KK Mart (somewhere opposite to the Desa Sri Hartamas food court).
Opens at 5pm-2am.
Tel: 03-2300 2010

 Happy birthday dear.
May you have great achievement in your career, life full of happiness and of course stay healthy always.

Kow Po ice creams @ Bentong

Decided to put this as a post on its own, rather than bury it in all the Bukit Tinggi photos. What a waste would that be, this is a must-go whenever one visits Bentong!

Let me reemphasize: If you go to Bentong, make sure that you drop by at this place!

They serve home made ice creams and various types of ice kacang, etc.
I've tried their ice kacang and chendol during my first visit few months ago. Not so special, but their ice creams were SUPERB! So this time I was just aiming for the ice creams.
Chocolate, vanilla, banana, pandan, peanut, etc etc..... Scratch your head to decide which flavour you want! Of course you may have all. ;)

We had chocolate, banana and pandan.

Overcherishing the ice creams.

See how smooth they were? The pandan tasted very natural, just like our homemade tong yuen using real pandan juice. For the banana flavour, it's like melting a frozen banana in your mouth. While for the chocolate, you could taste the slight bitterness and richness of the chocolate!

Even after it melted, you won't see whitish bubbling cream like any other ice creams. I wonder whether they use cream in making it?

Three scoops cost us RM7.50. When we were paying at the cashier, surprisingly we found out that those ice creams are available for take-away! At RM13 each box, we bought 1 box of chocolate flavour. It was actually a plastic container, wrapped with newspapers and according to the staff, it could stand for 3 hours without melting.

Malaysia's weather helps contribute to the good business. Why don't they open a branch in KL? I would visit it at least once a week!

If you go to Bentong, remember to go Kow Po. It is nearby Bentong bus station, located next to Hong Leong bank. And if you go to Kow Po, please request the boss to open a branch in KL. ;p
